Sleep like a... who?

Sleep like a... who?

Sleep like a... who?

(OP)

On the recent plane trip I was flipping thru a magazine (you know, the one 'in the pocket in front of you')  and was glancing pretty much just at the headings of the articles and (a lot of) advertisings.  One got my attention, it was an ad for a mattress : "Sleep like a Pro".  What?

I can understand advertising golf clubs: 'Golf like a Pro', or kitchen knifes: 'Cook like a Pro', or paint brushes: 'Paint like a Pro'.  But what professional makes his/her living by sleeping? (aside the oldest profession in the world, but that's not really 'sleeping', isn't it?)

The ad did not go into details of who is the Pro that we should admire and try to mimic.

Any ideas of who's the Pro in this context?

Have fun.

---- Andy

RE: Sleep like a... who?

I would suggest that the advertising agency are using the term to suggest that if there was a Pro sleeping circuit (like golf) the purchase of the mattress would elevate the purchaser to the level of a professional sleeper.

I don't think mthey are referring to any particular Pro in any other field.

RE: Sleep like a... who?

Also a professional doesn't give credence to what they do in my mind, it only means they get paid for what they do.

Many amateurs could better than professionals at a particular task, its just one might be a hobby and one a job.

Is there a job that involves people testing out mattresses?  If so, technically they would be professionals of the sleep industry....

I was expecting a picture of a baby.

I saw a play on this slogan on a recent TV show. A medical examiner had invented a pillow based upon the neck support he used on cadavers. His slogan was, "Sleep Like A Corpse."

I laways say "Sleep like a teenager" as the usual idom of 'baby' just makes me think I woke up three times and wet myself.

RE: Sleep like a... who?

I've been known to sleep like a log.  I keep waking up in the fireplace.

RE: Sleep like a... who?

I was also expecting a picture or news of a baby who is expected to sleep (well, like a baby), but, as many babies do, just doesn't fullfill those expectations.

As for "Sleep Like A Corpse" slogan, there are a few idioms for tight sleeping in Russian. One of them is approximately translates as "sleeps like a killed person". Another one is "sleeps like a marmot" (marmot being a hibernating rodent). "Sleeps like a baby" is also used on occasion.

RE: Sleep like a... who?

If there was a "Professional Sleeping Circuit", how would one judge performance? Time to unconciousness? Duration? Depth of sleep (duration of REM to non-REM sleep)? Penalties or even disqualification for bodily fluid eliminations? Drooling faults? and does snoring count for or against the participant?

Each night I tell my Bride to sleep like a baby, like a log like a lamb in hopes that she won't SNORE!!!

It rarely works.

Actually, Turkbear, that link represents one of the most atrociously written pieces of advertising junk I have ever read. The seller would have to pay me to read the book if the content is anything like the advertisement.

I believe I will use that ad in my Precision Communication class as a valuable editing exercise. So, in that regard, thanks for posting the link. 2thumbsup

BTW, Turkbear, please tell me that you are not associated with the book or the ad.

Li'l Abner used to have a job testing mattresses.  But that was back in the early 60s, so the job may be open now.

RE: Sleep like a... who?

Perhaps you'll sleep so well, that if there was a job where you got paid for sleeping, you'd be a professional at it?

RE: Sleep like a... who?

I think that someone who is paid to provide real dreams to those doing dream research could be classified as a sleeping professional.

RE: Sleep like a... who?

I thought dreams were considered not to happen while asleep but between Sleep and conciousness?

Are they dreaming professionals.

RE: Sleep like a... who?

Reasoned thought & advertising slogans are seldom related & I think this add proves the point.

interestingly people who say 'I slept like a baby' rarely have one smile

RE: Sleep like a... who?

A couple of instances I can think of, that people are being paid while sleeping, are:
1. Fire fighters, they can sleep while 'on duty' and still get paid.
2. Truck drivers - while driving as a two person team – one is behind the wheel and another one is sleeping and getting paid for it.  But that's still 'on duty' status and they get paid not for 'sleeping' but for being 'on duty'

If I can only persuade my boss that I am still 'on duty' when I snooze at my desk....  sleeping2
