How do you update to vmware tools 7

How do you update to vmware tools 7

How do you update to vmware tools 7

(OP)
Hi, i'm really confused.
Normally vmware is no problem but today i can't get anywhere, i have been searching the net all day for the answer to this.
I am running VSphere version 4, i've got 2 hosts and i use Veeam backup software for replication.
I have this error on replication jobs: "Changed block tracking cannot be enabled: virtual hardware version 7 or later required."
I understand that it is possible to run vmware tools version 7 with vsphere version 4, so far so good. But how? When i search vmware site is makes it sound SO easy. When i try to right-click on a vm in the inventory and select "Install/Upgrade VMware Tools" it will only install version 4. I have tried removing it, restarting, re-installing etc.
These are on all the old VM's originally created when we had ESX3, i know vmware tools version 7 is somewhere in my system because new VM's say 'VM Version 7' on the summary tab.
Does anyone know how to upgrade my old VM's to VMware tools version 7? I want all my VM's on the latest version because the replication jobs are faster

Please ignore this question. Have realised i was confusing vmware tools and the vmware hardware version.

RE: How do you update to vmware tools 7

Well, in case anyone lands on this page and wants to know how to upgrade the hardware versions, it is pretty easy, just power off the VM in vCenter, right click on it and select Upgrade Virtual Hardware. Power it back on.

I am sure there are lots of people upgrading from 3.x and 4.x to 5.0 so it might come up.

Cheers
Rob

The answer is always "PEBKAC!"

The thing that got me on this one is that the option to upgrade the vmware hardware version is only visible on the context menu of a powered down vm. As far as I know there is no other way to do it.
While the vm is on the option just isn't there.
All my servers were up, i didn't think to power one down, and i kept confusing it with upgrading vmware tools. I went round in circles for hours.

Like so many IT jobs it is laughably 'easy' - after you know how to do it winky smile
