Backup errors

(OP)
Trying to back up Octel 250 behind a CS1000 switch.
Getting 2 different types of error messages on 4 different tapes.
"Tape unusable" and "tape drive reset".
The tapes I have are hpdds-3 24gb and also have access to DGDAT72 36gb (not sure if they will work)
I have tried a cleaner tape and tried these 4 multiple times to no avail.
I know this is an old system and customer stubbornly hangs on to it....any advice as to my next step?
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

(OP)
Thanks for response. The current DDS-3 tapes have worked for quite some time now but I will check out where to get DDS-2 tapes and a new cleaner tape. In the meantime does anyone have any other ideas?

RE: Backup errors

DDS-2 and 3 will work in the newer tape drive units but if you have the older ones only DDS-2 will work. If you have been using DDS-2 then you must have the newer unit.

Try doing a backup during the day and only backup the data not the messages and see if it completes. If it does you may have a corrupt message or fax.

When was the last time a garbage collect was run on the system ? How many users ?

Do you know when the last time the system was rebooted ?  I have run into some systems that have been running for 5 or 6 years and needed a reboot to clear the tape drive operations up but that is rare.

Got new DDS-3 tapes ...same result, messages or no messages,....not sure what "garbage collect" means...can't find reference to it.
waiting for a new "cleaner tape".
I will likely wait to clean tape head before I reboot. (there's that dreaded word "reboot" again.) This old boat anchor sometimes has a hard time doing that.
There are 380 users.
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

(OP)
Forgot to answer your question....last time re-booted was about 8 months ago.
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

it may be that the tape drive has gone bad or that it is running into an error on the drive. please post the error messages that are in 13-2 please

RE: Backup errors

Stop calling Octel O-250's "boat anchors". They were the best multi system voicemail built. You might just need a re-boot or maybe the tape drive is shot. If you have a maintenance contract get it replaced and try again. Like I used to say the O in Octel stands for overtime!

It's a phone system, NOT a clock!

RE: Backup errors

Yikes! sorry bdmcdonald ....no maintenance contract.didn't mean to upset.
Anyway KenMeans here's 13-2...thanks again.

RE: Backup errors

the tape return code on all of the errors shows a tape unusable return.

if you are using dds2 then it looks like the drive may have gone bad.
You say it does not reboot well what do you mean by that ?

They usually boot or don't and depending on the integration it can be very fast or very slow.

i assume you are using FLT-N cards that take a long time to come-up.

Thanks for response....I am only on site part time and will not be there for a few days, but will get back with as much info as I can. This product is not in my main bailywick so I'm not as comfortable with it as I'd like. I do have documentation.
Any time I have had to reboot for power shutdowns it has either been excruciately slow or failed to come up first time. This has only been a handful of times in the past 6 years.

RE: Backup errors

(OP)
Yes FLT cards in place. Still no cleaner tape , but I notice the tape drive is on a card...can that be reseated without service interruption?
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

it can but it has been my experience that resetting the drive does not reset the buss connection for the drive.

RE: Backup errors

"Reseat" not reset....if there's a difference.
I was wondering if I wanted to remove the card (and drive) to make sure it's clean , can I do that without a service interruption? Then of course reinstall it under power?

RE: Backup errors

Just go to the drive install utilities and disable drive 6 pull it and then reseat it and enable drive 6.

Sorry...can't sweem to find "Drive install utilities"...which menu?

RE: Backup errors

menu 20 but you need to have the service bit turned on or call in to the modem to access the menu unless the eng bit is turned on.

how many Octels do you have ? We offer Maint contracts on them that would cover this

RE: Backup errors

The service bit must not be turned on because I cannot access this option.
Just the one Octel 250...I'm the contractor looking after MAC work and the maintenance agreement for system expired long ago. Customer had expected to replace everything before now. I generally make additions and changes to Octel along with backups without much trouble but this has just started.
In order for me to access through modem I have to get a communications software that provides WYSE 50 emulation...I can do this but will take a bit of time.
Thanks for info regarding maintenance, however I can't make that decision, not to mention I'm on the other side of the continent to you.
I'm just trying to back the system up....still waiting for a "cleaner" tape also.

RE: Backup errors

(OP)
I have now done the following:
Cleaned drive with new "cleaner" tapes, installed new tapes, rebooted Octel, disabled and removed tape drive assembly, enabled and reseated tape drive assembly. Same result "Tape Drive Reset"
I notice there is a reorder number on the assembly 012 2522 000... does that include the drive itself if we can get one?
More importantly does thia appear to be a drive issue?
Thanks

Just tried to do a Write /Read diagnostic and got the following:

RE: Backup errors

Well at this point it would seem that the drive is bad if you have changed out the tape and you are sure you are using a dds2 tape.

It still could just need a reboot to bring the bus back inline as i have seen this before. Or you may need a new tape drive unit. We do indeed have them.

"Reboot"....forgot to mention...been there done that.
I will be asking customer to look into sourcing a tape drive assembly.(Got a feeling they're more than five bucks)
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

(OP)
I have removed the drive assembly and manually cleaned head with alcohol...same issue.Older tape failure response is "tape unusable"...new tape response is "tape drive reset". Why two different responses??Does anyone have any suggestion for other things to try before buying a new tape drive assembly? I have located a supplier for one..not cheap.
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

And by not cheap you mean?  We sell them and they are not that bad.

If you have cleaned the head and still get the error then it must be the drive. You say old tape do you mean that the new tape is the same type? Or a different type of tape?

I assume that they are not getting any other types of alarms on the system and that everything else is working fine.

The only other thing that it could be is the drive bay backplane or the ccf card itself that is causing the issue as it is the controller prep's the data before it goes to the drive.

$1100.00...
Same type of tape.....older tape is the one used previously for years. Newer one is a HP DDS-3 24g (same as old one).Still don't know why I'm getting different failure responses.
As far as alarms go..I'm getting "Status Log Space Critical" in menu 13.8
Would hate to replace tape drive assembly only to find out it's not the problem.

Thanks

RE: Backup errors

Try a dds-2 tape and see what happens.

I may have asked this already but what happens if you just backup the data and say no to the messages ?

Also how busy is the system ?

RE: Backup errors

(OP)
I am backing up data only...no messages...don't have any DDS-2 tapes...been using DDS-3 always.
I managed to clear the  The Status Log Space Critical Alarm... although I did get a "staus log entry" alarm ...cleared that...but still same backup response. Can I check the backplane in any way?
As I said earlier I am only here on a part time basis and have to leave now until Thursday. I can dial in remotely if need be to check alarms again. Any thoughts you may have regarding other options are appreciated. No rush.
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

I would try backing up just one cos to see if anything changes. Other than that you may want to replace the drive.

Or haven the tape drive tested.  We cando that to see if it works in a lab system. Or if you get one and it does not fix the issue we would not charge you for it as long as it is returned

RE: Backup errors

how much for a replacement?
"     "    "   test/repair?
Tried one COS only...same result.
What does Tape Drive Reset actually mean?..not clear in docs.
Is there any point opr service affection in doing a "Garbage Collect?
Thanks

RE: Backup errors

the reset just means that it gave up as it could not complete the task.

it can mean that the motor cant move fast enough to keep up or that a mailbox is in use and it is trying to back it up.

i will need to get back to you on the cost.

Once again I'll be leaving here shortly until Tuesday but will keep an eye remotely.
What about "Garbage Collect" ?

RE: Backup errors

our cost on the drive is higher than $1100.00 so we could not do that low of a price.  if they buy it and it does not work out let us know and we can see what we can do.

If you were to send us the drive to test we would charge $250.00 plus any shipping fees.

Thanks...still checking with customer.
What about "Garbage Collect"?

RE: Backup errors

you can try it, it will not hurt to run it during the day if you know how to run it.

RE: Backup errors

Are these units typically repairable? What kind of hourly rate?

RE: Backup errors

They can be refurbed but the price is the same as getting one that is new or has been refurbed.

It had been 3 months so I guess the customer does not really care about the backups

I would say they need to bite the bullet and get a new tape drive not sure what else you can do about it.

RE: Backup errors

First I want to thank you for all your help. Got two used tape drives and interface cards. Tape drives worked fine with old interface cards but one card gives message "failed spin control" when trying to enable. I'm fine with new drives now I can back up but just curious what that message means? (The other card has physical damage).
Thanks again
