Question for Tom Morrison

Question for Tom Morrison

Question for Tom Morrison

(OP)
Hi.

We are creating a line sequential file on our VMS machine and then using Acucobol to copy the file into the windows world where it will perform some magic and create other files.

The problem that we are sitting with is that the file appears perfect on VMS but after Acucobol completes the initial copy to the windows directory then the file is "corrupted" because the copy function has inserted what looks like <tab>'s into the records.

We can't find any help on this so any ideas why this is happening or tips to resolve the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks.

RE: Question for Tom Morrison

I am less than an expert on AcuCOBOL and even less than that on VMS.

How is the line sequential file created on VMS?  With AcuCOBOL?  Are you sure that the file on VMS is without tab characters (using an octal or hex dump utility, not a text editor which may silently expand tabs)?

If you have a maintenance contract, this would probably make a great question for SupportLine.

Hi Tom.

I have logged this with support but so far we are no closer to a solution. I have in the mean time dicovered that the problem extends to the excel files that are created in the windows directory and then copied to the VMS server using C$COPY. So it seems the problem is not simply restricted to sequential files.

If I use FTP them the files are fine. It's only when I use C$COPY that we have problems.

Any ideas or possibly you know of somebody who may be a whizz at Acucobol. (We use 8.0.0 at the moment).

Thanks.
Hayden.

RE: Question for Tom Morrison

Hi Hayden,

No, I come from a different branch of the family tree.  I think the advice you are getting the other thread is probably useful.  Frederico is offering some really good diagnostic help, and he is quite good at these things.
