IBook G4 and Facebook.

IBook G4 and Facebook.

IBook G4 and Facebook.

(OP)
Need someone's help.  Got an Ibook on CL and works fine but won't play videos from like Youtube or any webnews outlet.  I plays DVDs and other MPG's and stuff like that but like in Youtube, when I click on the clip I want to watch, Safari just closes down.  I have updated all program software.  Running OS 10.3.9.

Thanks.

RE: IBook G4 and Facebook.

Perhaps Flash Player needs to be installed.

Youtube and other online video sources use Flash to deliver the movies.

Hey Vacunita, thank you for coming to my rescue again.  I went to the flash site mentioned and I can't get beyond step 1. Selecting the OS for my ibook.  Just sits there.  Then I went to Perian.org but can't get that since my OS is 10.3.9.  Next I'll try the apple.com/downloads.

Thank you all for your tips.

Ok, this is what I did instead, Using another PC, I went to both sites, downloaded the installer files on to a flashdrive, brought this flashdrive to my ibook and ran the programs from there.  Flash seemed to have installed, not the other program. I get the message again that the file was "corrupt".  So then I google youtube and when I selected the site, my Safari just went blank and asked me to send failure report to Apple.  So still not able to view youtube videos or news videos.  DVD plays movies fine.

Any other thoughts?

Also, what is a OS X installer?

RE: IBook G4 and Facebook.

Select the OS, and then click on the yellow "Continue" button. It should then bring up an "Agree and Install" button. It doesn't do that?

Perhaps updating Safari first or downloading another browser to try might work.

Yes, it doesn't do that.  How would I update Safari?  I tried installing firefox and it too would not install.  Just weird.  Then again, I'm a PC guy trying to Mac here. That could be the whole problem?

RE: IBook G4 and Facebook.

Maybe I need to upgrade the entire OS X on this ibook.  Will a G4 Ibook work with OS-X 10.6.3?  Someone is selling it on CL near me and if it would work, I'd give it a try?

RE: IBook G4 and Facebook.

since your ibook is a G4 so you can run up to OS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" on 800Mhz model, or up to OS X 10.5 "Leopard" on the faster models.

At home I have a G4 eMac running 10.4.xx, which runs youtube videos just fine...amazingly well all things considered...so we should be able to figure out how to get your ibook going.

Thanks for the reply.  The seller of the Snow Leopard I mentioned just emailed me and said his version would not work on my machine.  That it was for Intel running Macs.  My system as a PowerPC G4 1.2 running 1.33GHz.

I tried update Safari and that too failed.  Same as Firefox.

Ok, I got one more question on this G4 subject, how can I tell the hardware in an Ibook G4?  Is there a BIOS screen like on PC's?  Some guy is selling another G4 but won't boot and he does not know what hardware is in it?

RE: IBook G4 and Facebook.

go to the "About This Mac" screen from the Apple menu, and click on More Info.

You'll get the System Profiler which will tell you everything about the Hardware in it.

RE: IBook G4 and Facebook.

Other than that I think a complete re-install of OSx may be the only way to solve the problems.

Assuming you got a System DVD, you can just insert it, and initiate the reinstall form there.

Thanks guys, can't do "about this mac" because it won't boot/start.  Not sure of a DVD present on this system.  Just found a site where you can do "single user start".  Got some reading to do there.
