shift key not working

I am trying to select multiple objects by using the shift key. it will not allow me to do this. using version CS4. the shift key does work in all other cases such as in type....
is there  a preference that needs to be changed?
please respond asap.

You do have either the black or white arrow tool selected, yeah?
Sorry if that sounded like a silly question, but I don't know your level of experience

thanks for the reply..... turned out my i needed new batteries in my wireless keyboard.... the shift key was working for typing so i didnt understand why it wasnt working for selecting but once i changed the batteries. everything worked fine.
