How do I move my iTunes from one comp to another?

How do I move my iTunes from one comp to another?

How do I move my iTunes from one comp to another?

(OP)
Hi there,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not but here goes...

I have an old computer with my iTunes and several hundred GB of music and I sync my 2 iPods and my iPhone to it.

I just bought a brand new comp (because the old one is nearly dead) and I want to move everything to it. My problem however is that as soon as I try to sync my iPhone etc is the software going to try or force me to erase everything on my Touch and Phone? I have too much other stuff (apps, notes, contacts etc etc) that I dont want to lose. How do I do this or am I stuck using my old comp now to add music and sync?

Thanks

Are both of these machines Mac's? If so, Mac has a biult in app to move data from the old to the new - I've used it and it seems to work really well.

There's also an article on the apple.com site on moving iTunes.

Hi

Computer is a PC. My main concern really is that my iPhone doesn't try to erase itself completely because it's a new computer that it doesn't recognize. I can't afford to lose all the data I have on it. I have many apps for work with extra data in them and need to keep it all as it took Trever to put it all on there.

Would you NOT make a backup?

RE: How do I move my iTunes from one comp to another?

In did this recently when I upgraded some hardware and wanted to move my music collection.  Both machines are on the same LAN, and while the old machine was an XP/PC and the new one an iMac doing it between two PC's shouldn't be any different.

Install iTunes on the new machine.
Set File Sharing on, with the old machine
On the New machine, select the Music collection from the old machine, and copy it to the new one. (Highlight the Songs in List View, Right Click, Copy, then Right Click Paste into current playlist)
The Play Count and the Last played date will be reset, but you then have a full copy of the music files on the new machine.

My 126GB of music files took several hours to copy across the network.

If you have some playlists you want to keep, on the old machine "Export" to a txt file, copy the file to the new machine, and "Import" there.  As long as you haven't changed any names, genre's etc, the new playlist should appear okay.

When you plug your iPhone or iPod into the new machine you will be asked if you want to register it for the new machine.  As long as you have the music on the new machine, that should delete and reload the music onto those devices.

Thanks Chelseatech. Did that delete everything else though on your iphone, like contacts, notes and other data?

No, By registering the iPhone on the new machine the contact list was rebuilt with the names already on the phone.  I don't synch notes, so can't comment on that.
