DBVisualizer Error on Create Table

DBVisualizer Error on Create Table

DBVisualizer Error on Create Table

I haven't used proper SQL DB before (only Paradox) and am having trouble creating a test table using DBVisualizer.  I'm concerned that the wizard does not have provision for defining primary key, but the error msg is awkwardly vague.

An error occurred while executing the database request for:
Mimer SQL Engine
10.00.0005 Mimer SQL Engine 10.0.5g

Short message:
Syntax error, IDENTIFIER ignored

The command that caused the problem:
create table "MIMER"."TestOne"(
"RefNum" INTEGER, "Name" CHARACTER(p), "StartDate" DATE)

Long Message:
Syntax error, IDENTIFIER  ignored

   Type: java.sql.SQLException
   Error Code: -12102
   SQL State: 42000

System Information:
Product: DbVisualizer Free 6.0.6
Build: #1289 (2007/10/12 21:02)
Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
Java Version: 16.2-b04
Java Vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.
OS Name: Windows 7
OS Arch: x86
OS Version: 6.1

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?  Thanks

RE: DBVisualizer Error on Create Table

You need to specify an actual value for the precision

CHARACTER(p) should be character(50) or what is the apropriate length.

RE: DBVisualizer Error on Create Table

Thanks for the response.  Your comment looks as though it should be correct, but there is no provision for size in the DbVisualizer form (see attachment).  It's version 6.06 but does not correspond to the manual for version 6, which shows a size columnn.

Not sure where we go from here....

RE: DBVisualizer Error on Create Table

Think I've found an answer.  The pen and pad icon above the SQL Preview window at the bottom of the form image (attached previously), copies the sql code into the SQL Commander.  There the CHARACTER(p) can be amended and then the code executed successfully.

I was also concerned about the lack of index/key parameters in the create table form, so presumably that can be fixed in a similar manner.

The question now rears up - is DbVisualizer going to be a problem and would I therefore be better using something else?
