Waledac botnet being taken down

Waledac botnet being taken down

RE: Waledac botnet being taken down

This is a relatively minor botnet, responsible for less than 1% of the world's spam.  It was good in that there was a legal precedent established for going around the registrars and shutting down the C2 servers.  This has not been done in the past, and takes many months and lawyers.

Read about how a small team did basically the same thing in 24 hours:

http://blog.fireeye.com/research/2009/11/smashing-the-ozdok.html

...as well as UAB's temporary shutdown of the Torpig botnet in 2008, I think.

Spam volumes have not dropped as much as when they shut down McColo last November.  Here's a list of spam logging sites:

...no great downturn yet, and Waledac may yet return, as we don't know what fallback mechanisms might be in place.

Any publicity is good publicity, and helps raise awareness among the "average users" and remind them that these threats are out there.  I'll take what I can get, but no cartwheels yet.

Tony
