iMac Newbie Cant Access Office Word etc from Guest Account

iMac Newbie Cant Access Office Word etc from Guest Account

iMac Newbie Cant Access Office Word etc from Guest Account

(OP)
Background: I am very familiar with PCs but this is my first iMac.

Loaded Office 2008 in the administrator... then opened a Guest Account and there in no access to Word PowerPoint Entourage etc.. go back to Administrator and there it is !

So is there a switch, or another work around solution that will allow me to use word etc in my Guest Account..Or (heaven forbid)  am I forced to do a re-install and if so will I use up one of my licences ?

I have done a web search with no joy.

Thanks.. and seasons greetings.

RE: iMac Newbie Cant Access Office Word etc from Guest Account

I have not used the lastest Office on my Mac, so i may be way off....

When installed, it sounds like it installed to the user Applications folder and not to the root Applications folder.

So you may have to uninstall and reinstall as Admin and change the default install path.

You could try copying the applications themselves to the other directory, but with MS it is likely to break something.

RE: iMac Newbie Cant Access Office Word etc from Guest Account

when you say 'no access' do you mean that the icons are not in the Dock (the icon bar at the bottom) or magically the applications are not to be found in the Applications folder?  the icons will not be in the Dock unless the user has specifically put them there (or that user account was used for installation).  instead browse using Finder to Applications/Microsoft Office. you can add apps to the Dock later just by dragging them (amongst many methods)

and is the guest account limited in any way?  with some accounts the user is locked into using only certain applications.  blocked applications do not show in the Finder.

I have not heard of there being separate Applications Folders for users.  to my knowledge all applications are installed into /Applications.  It is the permissions that make the difference.

jpadie

good thought on the Dock.

OS X does create a user specific Applications directory in addition to the 'universal' Applications directory, just as it does for Documents, Music, Movies, etc.

However, I have very little experience with the Guest account since OS9 and OS X 10.3 so it very well could be different now.

Thanks guys

By 'no access' I mean that the icons are not in the Dock (the icon bar at the bottom)

OK so let me try the suggestions,,,

Well I thought that I was there...

I was able to copy the Word Excel etc icons to the Dash Board... and that was great,,,and it looked like it was there forever,,

BUT

then I logged out of guest and then logged back in and Uh Oh ! the dashboard icons for Word Excel etc etc were removed,,

Also removed were  'my defaults'  under Safari  (e.g. I set the default home page to google and the iMac replaces it with apple.com or something similar .

I have seen this behaviour before, when changing between myself (administrator) and the guest account..

Dammed if I know how to fix current issue.. but the Office Icons have disappeared  from the guest's DASH BOARD (at least until I reload them)

Sorry boys I thought we were there

RE: iMac Newbie Cant Access Office Word etc from Guest Account

what do you mean by dashboard?  are you talking about the desktop?  if so it seems you have dragged an application from the Applications folder into a user's desktop folder.  this is why it is no longer visible when logging on to another account.

if you want to emulate windows by having an icon on the DESKTOP then use an alias.  this is the equivalent of a windows shortcut.

1. drag the applications back into applications.
2. log in as admin and run a permissions fix (disk utility).
3. go into the applications folder, right click on the thing you want on your desktop and select make alias.
4. click on the newly created alias and drag it onto your desktop.

an alternative is to drag/drop with the CMD+ALT buttons depressed.

@fisheromacse

in my experience (macbooks and imacs on Panther, Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard) user level application directories are not created.  however I only use standard and admin accounts.  it may very well be that a user application directory is created for guest/parental controlled accounts.  i will investigate further one of these days...

I think that my ignorance is the problem.

I think that if I create a Guest Account... when I log off and go and do something else then I re-log on as Guest.. all of the 'DOX' that I previously created are gone,, ie Word etc etc

I suspect that if I log-back-in as any other (ie a new) account other than one named Guest Account ... and created a new profile,,, then this new account I would remember all the Dock settings for this new account

Sorry to be a bore But I think by creating a new account.... it seems to me that SHOULD solve my problem

'll try emailing tomorrow

...guest account is a temporary login, all information and files in the guest accounts home folders are deleted...

Thanks Andrew,

You are, of course, correct...  and that is why I have to create a new account altogether.

Thanks to all for solving it for me.

End of post..
