How do I open a .pkg.zip?

How do I open a .pkg.zip?

How do I open a .pkg.zip?

downloaded some lite app as a .pkg.zip and I thought it would be a simple case of either Stuffit Expanding or using Archive Utility to extract the file.

Best I can do is archive it further into a .pkg.zip.cpgz

Does anyone know how to open this?

Many thanks

RE: How do I open a .pkg.zip?

A zip file should open without problem in the OS. Are you certain that it is a zip file? Does it have the expected size of a program or is it only a few KB? Sometimes a misconfigured download script on a server will dish out something that looks like a file but when you open it in a text editor, you see it is HTML saying that the file is not found.

RE: How do I open a .pkg.zip?

Thanks for replying spamjim.

The file's about 12MB. It's supposed to be a lite version of a .swf compressor, so the size is about what I would about expect for such a small app.

It seems to suggest it's the extracted .pkg of a .dmg that's then been zipped (don't know why you'd do that), but none of the usual methods of extraction are opening it...

RE: How do I open a .pkg.zip?

Try right clicking on it and go to the Open With command on the pop up menu. See what choices are given and try any or all of them.

Also, be a bit careful.  Since this does not seem to be in any normal format, you have to make sure that it does not contain any malware, etc.

Using OSX 10.3.9 & 10.4.11 on a G4, G5 & Intel Macbook

RE: How do I open a .pkg.zip?

Thanks JM, all I have is Stuffit and Archive Utility coming up and neither accepted the file.

Not too worried now about using the app as I've managed to reduce my .swf by other means. Still perplexed by what looks like a zipping of a .pkg though.

.pkg (Mac program install)
.zip (zipped archive)
.cpgz (archive format typical for BSD-like systems)

Are all normal formats. What is not normal is the bouncing between these formats. A google search can bring up a few more archive extraction apps that might help. The trouble may be that you already have too many archive extraction tools warring with each other on your system through file associations or a context menu. See if a standalone extraction tool that does not attempt to fire up the other tools can be found.
