unkown virus help
(OP)
Hey people,
Don't know how I managed to allow these to get onto my computer but I have a virus now that does several things;
I use Firefox but this virus opens up my internet explorer in the background and starts opening various websites with videos playing (I have the sound of film trailers coming through my speakers). Once I end the iexplorer process in the taskmanager the sounds stop playing.
If I try and open IE the window opens but is swiftly followed by the error message that the program has encountered a problem and needs to close.
My Firefox won't open when I double click the logo...but if I double click like 10 times in a row it will open 4 windows and allow me to then browse the web
Finally, I know it's a virus as, when I search for anything in Google search, the results show as normal, but when I click a link, it opens in a new tab (which doesn't normally happen) and then redirects to a completely different website.
for example, if I search "virus check", the link to the Kaspersky website appears in the results...if I click that link it will redirect through various different websites;
htt p://window sclick.com /go.php?u= b53cb9f643 37aa54f463 42a4dc71f5 99%3Dcr%26 423%3Dld%2 6HEw65zZ8p Vu4TiWl6Hi CPDc9fIVDQ.......
then onto;
http: //www.kdir ectory.co. uk/results .asp?qry=v irus+check &rfid= luus5_6080 3-1936_263 0&bp=v irus+check
However if I click the cached link in the google search results it directs to the correct website.
also, every so often a blank IE window opens with the web address;
ht tp://url.u rtbk.com/c pv.jsp?p=1 13059& partnerMin =0.0028&am p;ronMin=0 .0028& url=158&am p;ip=86.17 .29.40& ;selectedK eyword=ron &selec tedListing Id=7292712
Does anyone know which virus this is and how I can get rid of it?
Many thanks in advance,
Jordan

RE: unkown virus help
Download MBAM (Malware Bytes' AntiMalware):
MBAM
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
if it does not install, then DL it either on a clean PC or use the SAVE AS option and then rename the EXE file, e.g. TEST.EXE instead of MBAM.EXE
you also may have to install it in SAFE MODE with NETWORKING (F8 BOOT MENU)...
Super AntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
Same as above...
general advice:
1. Turn off SYSTEM RESTORE...
2. run both scans in SAFE MODE...
also posting a HiJackThis LOG, would allow us to check if the system is further compromised and to tell you what to delete (using HJT)...

Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"
RE: unkown virus help
I have tried downloading in safe mode with networking (F8) but my Firefox and IE says they are not connected to the internet when I try and load the download page?
I tried the SuperAntispyware, downloaded fine (firefox) but when i try and run it the "...has encountered a problem and needs to close" error cums up straight away?
Am I fooked?! haha
Thanks again for ur help

I must say that "DLACTRLW.exe" in that log is a process that I haven't noticed before.....and "ending" the process in the task manager doesn't work...just stays there?
cheers again
RE: unkown virus help
This is something I do not do normally, but seeing that you are desperate here are several versions you could download... though I would suggest that you download them on a clean PC and then rename them there...

then I would also suggest that you uninstall those TOOLBARS that are running rampart on your system, e.g. ASK, Yahoo, Google, etc. (if you need one then by all means leave just ONE)...
Here are TWO LIVE CD's, which have proven to be very helpful in fighting malware with the Windows OS out of the equation...

RE: unkown virus help
Most problems have now been fixed so many thanks for taking time out to help me mate.
Only problem I have now is the Google installer keeps showing a "...has encountered a problem and needs to close error" every half an hour or so....but that's something I can sort out on my own.
Again, thanks for taking time out to help me, greatly appreciated
RE: unkown virus help
about the Google installer problem, see if there is an entry in the ADD&REMOVE SOFTWARE Control Panel app and then delete it there...
alternatively you may have to install another GOOGLE app, e.g. Earth View, and then get rid of the GOOGLE INSTALLER...

jordan360,
Welcome to tek-tips!
On tek-tips when you find someone's reply/assistance useful and helpful, it helps everyone else out if you can make it known by clicking the link under their post that says Thank BadBigBen for this valuable post! No, I'm not shouting, that's just the way it's written.
Otherwise, here are a few general "clean-up"/"fix-up" apps that may help after you've used MBAM and/or SuperAntiSpyware, etc, to clean up your system:
CCleaner
IObit Advanced System Care
Glary Utilities
From the times I've used them on several different PCs when helping folks, as well as my own PCs, I've only once seen any issue out of any of them. On one occasion, after running CCleaner's clean-up, a cheapie hunting game quit working. It was run off a CD, and once it was reinstalled, all was back to normal... and all their other issues had been taken care of at that time. CCleaner was part of the particular solution.
