Tried to place a logo from illustrator to indesign via saved PDF and the white type in the logo does not show in the pdf when placed. I have cut and paste as smart object to photoshop and saved PDF from there but still white does not appear in indesign when placed, nor as an illustrator ai file , anyone got any ideas? Both versions are CS3

Make sure the white in Illustrator is not set to overprint
Also, when you save the .ai make sure you tick the box that says PDF Compatible file, an .ai can contain both the illustrator info and the pdf as a seperate file - in one file.
