Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

(OP)
I have been using Sidekick 98 since about 1999/2000. During the following years I have had to reinstall the programme on several occasions, due to changing my computer or after formatting my hd after a virus attack. All these reinstalls have resulted in the accumulation of various files which I can't identify, many of which I have deleted. However, I have never had a problem with a reinstallation until now. For some reason I am unable to save Contacts information.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem.

RE: Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

Dear ifmac,

Check that the files are not read only, if they are it will show it at the top if you have
"show the full path in the title bar"
enabled (i.e. ticked) in the
Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View Tab

If that is the case, go to the files using explorer and highlight them and right-click on them and choose Properties and then untick the read only attribute.

Thanks James. I'm not quite sure what you mean by show it at the top if you have "show the full path in the title bar"
enabled (i.e. ticked) in the Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View Tab. However, none of the files are Read-only.

Any other suggestions? Is it possible that there could be a file missing?

RE: Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

Dear ifmac,

Have you tried to SaveAs the Cardfile under a different name?
Then edited it and saved the result.
I forgot the usual first question:
1: What operating System are you using.

If you have "Full path...." ticked, then the path to the file you have open is shown along the top of the Window and then you can check that the file which is open is the one whose properties you are checking.

If you use an explorer window to look at the files make sure sidekick is not running and see if there are any xxxx.SKTmp files and if there are delete them.
The xxxx is the name you gave the files .
These are temporary files left behind if you crash sidekick or the computer, and will stop a new SKTmp being produced which is the file that carries any changes until you Ctrl+L and then exit Sidekick. They usually tell Sidekick when it opens if there was a crash that some lost data is present and was not saved when it crashed. Sometimes in those cases you find they put back duplicate Records so always check after a crash that you have no duplicates of records you were editing shortly before the crash.

Jim

Thanks James. I am using Vista, which I hate.

As I said in my last reply, I am not sure what you mean by "If you have "Full path...." etc. However, I have tried renaming the files and that appears to work. Thank you.

Now that I have renamed them, would it be safe to delete the original files and change the renamed ones back to the original ones?

On a related matter, I know that I have redundant files in the userdata folder. Can you tell me how I can identify the ones I can delete?

RE: Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

Dear ifmac,

I would suggest that until you are completely certain you have all the information in the original file that you rename it and move it to a special folder and then Save As the one you have saved under a different name back to the original name and then delete that one.

Those in the Userdata folder I would suggest that you open them and check first and then save them to the special folder just in case. I am a little anal and still have most if not all of my data from 1993->.
If you have Vista you probably also have a lot of room on your disk.

Thanks again for your help.

I am not sure what you mean by a screenshot of the "folder". If you mean the files, when I click on each one they open Sidekick's Calendar at the weekly view, which is what I've set as the opening view.

RE: Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

Dear ifmac,

When you have a Windows Explorer window opened at the Userdata folder, press the Key called
Prt.Scr/Sys.Rq
and then open a graphics program and right-click and paste into a blank document.
Save the picture as a .jpg by choosing from the drop down list of Files of Type.
Sidekick does not necessarily open a file that is associated with it when you double-click on it.

RE: Sidekick 98 Contacts save problem

Dear Ifmac,
It's been suggested to me that I make more of a case for any files that we wish to show each other to be posted on to a website and a link included in the post so all can see it.
If you are sure there is nothing personal in the screenshot why not take advantage of the upload to box.net link below
which opens this page:

http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-2633152-10489882

The offer goes as follows:

INDIVIDUAL Medium size Box for 1 User
5 GB, share & store photos, docs & larger files
Try Free for 14 Days. Only $7.95/month thereafter

and then put the link in your post.

like this:

Otherwise there are  other free options at Yahoo and google
