Requesting some thoughts on Devry *UPDATE*

I will be applying at BTI (Berks Technical Institute) here in Reading, PA. I will go for BTI's 24 month "Internet/Network Engineering" program. I will receive an associates degree, and will complete various cisco/microsoft certifications during the 24 month period at school.

Here's a link to the details of the program at BTI- http://www.berkstech.com/internet-network.htm

Since this is only an associates degree it will really only be the start to my career, and my first job will most likely be a help desk or other entry level job.

I would very much appreciate some input on the program. The total cost for the program will be $31,020. That includes all fees, books, and my certification test fees. I thought that this price was very reasonable for the program. Also, my rent here in PA is only $200 a month. (thanks to a friend :)

But all in all, I'm thinking this is a good (economical) start?

Thanks in advance!!

RE: Requesting some thoughts on Devry *UPDATE*

Have you looked into a community college or a state college? $31,000 for an AS degree, I could get 8-9 AS or AA degrees at the college I work at for that!!!!

Second, do your credits from this school transfer to a state college?????? If they do not - run away very quickly, and don't ask them - ASK the state college in your area!!!!

I have seen many of these students come through our Cisco Network Academy, they pay $230 for our Cisco classes and cry about the $30,000 student loan they have!!! No we don't include the exam fee but that is only $150!

If I were you I would look at community colleges and state colleges in your area, I would also go to www.cisco.com and look for Cisco Network Academies in your area, if that is the route you want to go!!

Don't be fooled, short of MIT, Yale, or Princeton etc. a degree is a degee whether you pay $3,000 or $31,000. Most colleges these days will have a computer science or MIS degree program that you can work towards. The key is to make sure that your credits can TRANSFER when you go on for a BS or BA and then your MASTERS!!!!!

Good luck!!

$31,000 for a two-year degree is madness.  Absolutely insane.  Go check your local community college.

I agree with you 100%, my friend just got her MASTERS from Syracuse University in Networking for about $30,000!!!

Masters YES, AS for $31,000 - you have got to be crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like I said for in state students at the college I work it is about $70 per credit hour x 60 hours = $4,200 add books about another $800-$1,000 less about $400 when you sell them back - so for $31,000 you could get 6 AS/AA degrees at a community college (not that you need 6 ) smile smile

I would be looking long and hard at state schools!!!!

Good luck!!!

Not to mention that most State Colleges and Universities tend to carry more prestige and merit in the professional world than small trade/tech schools. (Obviously there are exceptions to this).
