Have two fields :
     average_rating /P8.3   (value is 3.257)
     name /A50    (value is Smith, John)
command is
    average_rating as 'RATE'
yields all the spaces
   NAME                             RATE
  Smith, John                         3.257
how can I get the name to truncate at 20 char & the
rate to print as 3.257 without the 3 front spaces?

Truncating the name is easy:


However, your numeric is RIGHT JUSTIFIED (so the decimal points all align). If you KNOW that all your fields will have only a single sigit for the whole number component, you can add:
