VMWare Specifying MAC Address different than host machine

VMWare Specifying MAC Address different than host machine

VMWare Specifying MAC Address different than host machine

(OP)
Hello,
I installed VMWare Server 2.0 on a Windows Vista 64 bit Ultimate  laptop and I am trying to use a specific MAC Address that is required for licensing, different than the host.

The default mac address for the host machine keeps appearing in the Network card on the virtual machine and will not allow a change.  The network is set to "Bridged."

What do I need to do to set the MAC Address on the virtual  network card to the specific address I need while retaining connectivity to the net for the virtual machine?

RE: VMWare Specifying MAC Address different than host machine

Goto your VMWare folder and locate the .vmx file.
Back that file up.
Open it in notepad and locate the line that looks something like this: ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:00:00:00:00:00"
Change the MAC in the quotations to match the one you need.
Locate the line that reads: uuid.action = "create"
Change "create" to "keep"
Try that and let me know if it remedies your situation.
If not, then just restore the backup of your original .vmx.

RE: VMWare Specifying MAC Address different than host machine

I assume that you will have to reboot the server after making the change suggested above to the vmx file to allow the change to take effect

Only the guest OS not the host.

Simon

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Thanks. That worked.
After changing the mac address and setting to static, ipconfig /all shows the desired mac address as the physical address.
