Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

I finally got my Ubuntu CD in the mail today.
I would like to install it on to the second hard drive that the fine users of this community help me install a while back.

It appears i can not run the live CD, as that requires 384 MB of RAM. I only have 256.
Will it still have dual boot capability from the slave drive, or does it have to be on drive C for that?

Basically, i just want to install it without affecting windows on my C drive in any way.

Any help and tips installing this  would be greatly appreciated. Pro's and cons, different configurations, ect.

Thank you.

RE: Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

I can tell you that it will likely run slowly with only 256M of RAM (I just installed it on a friend's PC and I gave him a little more memory to boost him to 512.)

If you still need to install you'll need to get the alternate CD installer which is a text-only mode installer.

With 256M of RAM the machine I was on was swapping constantly and was very slow as a result.

As far as installing ubuntu on a second drive, it can be done, but the bootloader will have to be loaded into the MBR of the first drive. Otherwise there are no issues.

RE: Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

Thanks Danomac, i may just wait until i add the extra memory.
I had no idea it was such a memory hog.

RE: Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

I do believe a lot of the extra memory is consumed by compiz, and I think I disabled it by unchecking something in the (very few) options. It didn't really seem to have any effect on the PC's overall speed, however.

RE: Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

Thank you geirendre, i'm going to give that a try.

I dont get broadband where i live, so downloading to my computer is not happening.
Is it possible to download Xubuntu onto a CD?
If so, i can have a friend download it from that link to a CD for me.

RE: Installing Ubuntu on second hard drive

Well, the only way to get it onto an CD is burning it to the CD with a computer.
So you (or somebody else) need to download it first.
Maby you have a local Linux User Group near you that can help you
get a copy of an CD.( It's legal to copy Ubuntu CD's)
