You can read about it here. Now this isn't the enterprise version you're limited to two processors but still, I can't wait for this!

RE: VMWare ESXi will be FREE!!! Starting next week!

I downloaded the free ESXi version but there doesnt seem to be any client management component with it.  Is there another component I need to actually use the ESXi package? Ive been looking at the vmware site but they have so many products and versions I cant quite figure out what i need.

thanks for any comments/suggestions

You'll need VMWare Virtual Center (which includes Virtual Infrastructure Client which what you really need) and you can get it here: http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/ you'll also need the Virtual Converter if you want to convert physical machines to virtual.

Thanks, I also finally figured out when you install ESXi server it will give you a link to the Infrastructure Client..

bookouri,

would you please post the link to the Infrastructure client? I just downloaded and installed ESX and I never saw any link. I looked around on the VMware site for the Infrastructure client and all I find are programs with price tags.

Thanks,

Joe B

biglebowski,

Thanks! I'll take a look and see what I can see.

RE: VMWare ESXi will be FREE!!! Starting next week!

biglebowski (and anyone else),

I found the Infrastructure Client right where you said it would be, but now that I have it installed and running I see that there's a 60 day countdown. SO, even though the ESXi is free if we want to use the Infrastructure Client we have to pay for it after 60 days?

I gave up using VMware server on Linux because of SERIOUS performance issues with the computer it was installed on. I did the ESXi thing because I thought that running a VM on a VMware OS (for the most part) would be the most stable, most cost-effective thing to do. Is there a free version of the Infrastructure Client available somewhere? Does anyone else know how to get virtual machines running for free? I don't have the $$$ to be able to get what I want so I'm starting to think that I'm stuck with dreaming about VMs rather than using them in production.

Thanks,

Joe B

RE: VMWare ESXi will be FREE!!! Starting next week!

Did you activate the license you received from VMware when you signed up for the download of ESXi?

RE: VMWare ESXi will be FREE!!! Starting next week!

I feel kinda stupid asking this but where do I go on the VMware website to activate the code? I've been wandering around trying to find where to do it and no joy so far. I've found places to do codes that were purchased, but nothing for activating a free product code.

Thanks,

Joe B

RE: VMWare ESXi will be FREE!!! Starting next week!

<Huge, great big sigh> All I had to do was go into the server using the Infrastructure Client, go to configuration and put the license in. It's working now.

Thanks,

Joe B

Glad you figured it out, I've been at VMWorld in Vegas ... what a blast, so I am just now getting around to all my emails.

Cheers
