Open Word Docs In Word

Hi - working on a generic company intranet (not ready for Expressions yet) and I'm trying to figure out how to get a link to a MS Word doc to open in "Word" v. opening in a web browser.  By putting a simple hyperlink like:

"\\myserver\networkfolder\document.doc" will open the document but in the current IE web browser session (or in a new window if used with the _new command).

Any way to force the document to be opened in Word?  I presume a potential solution for this would also apply for Excel documents as well.
Thanks for any help!

Sometimes I don't heed to the Google Gods...I entered a simple query on this subject and found this:

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/sharing/OpenDocInIE.html

It's not an HTML issue...it's a Windows Setting (i.e. File Types > Advanced).

I place here for anyone else who has this problem with this archaic application.
