I have a report that has a calculation that is showing negative numbers as -98. I would rather it use parentheses, (98), but can't figure out where to change how negatives display.

You can have different formats for numbers by using the format function.

Dear ,
Here is an example that formats a dollar field, has floating dollar sign, brackets negative number with ().
The first format is for positive, the second for negative and the third for zero values. It also change the negative value to red.
Place this value format field:
$#,##0.00[Black];(-$#,##0.00)[Red];$0.00[Black]

That worked - except now it's giving me both (-98.0)

Sometimes I feel that those of us who offer the help are just doing the work for the others.
If someone can just give me a sample that comes close to solving my problem, I play with it until I get the result I want.

Thanks - that worked, and I'm sorry if it was a stupid question. I would have played around with it and might have figured it out - I had never messed around with formats that weren't already listed.
What I don't understand is the attitude that you're doing other people's work for them - you don't have to answer the question. I do appreciate your help and am sorry if you thought I should have figured it out myself.

When someone helps another person, it is free advice.
If you had tried what I suggested and then attempted to revise it and that did not work, then I would have been more than happy to work you through the next problem.
But, if you plug in my suggestion and it does not do exactly what you want, and you ask me to fix it, well you do not learn anything, others reading this post will not benefit, bottom line, I will still know how to do it and no one else benefits.
Sometimes it just gets a little overwhelming. Not just me, but many other helpful people here making many suggestions/posts here all day long.
Also, the free advice does not cost anything, but when your problem is solved, in the Tek-Tips forum, you are suppose to award whomever helped by awarding them a star.
So, if someone helped you with this topic, where is the star for someone.
This is a technical forum, so I apolize for the rant, enough said.

As soon as I hit "send" - I thought of that - but it was too late, the question had already been sent. I have gotten help several times from Tek-Tips - and other times the answers maybe didn't work exactly - but put me on the right track to figure it out myself. I don't expect other people to do my work for me, but I'm working on a very challenging (for me) project - and sometimes I just get stuck and need some help.
