Help getting started with ITMU

I am having trouble figuring out how to get ITMU working. I have downloaded the scan tools etc., updated SMS to SP3 without issue, etc. From what I can tell, it’s installed, the packages were created, collections (Microsoft Update Tool and Microsoft Update Tool (pre-production) Sync, IA64, and x64.
Problem is, I can’t find any documentation that is strait forward, explaining how to configure or implement ITMU. Everything I am finding tells me all about what it CAN do but not how to do it. Anybody out there willing to give me a few pointers on how to make use of the tool so that we can start using it for updating office / windows updates, etc.?

I have 9 primary sites and a central site they all report to along with another 12 distribution points in remote locations.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help out.
