We have an existing Exchange 2000 server that works fine. We installed an exchange 2007 server in coexistence to that server.

We can send and receive mail great from the 2000 server but we can only receive mail on the 2007. When we try to send mail from the 2007 server to 2003 server, the message gets stuck in queue.

We want the 2000 server to the smtp server for now and all mail to be sent out through it and not the 2007 server.

When we try to send to an external address we get:
"A matching connector cannot be found to route the external recipient"

We added a send connector of * but that seemed to take over both mail servers and all mail was trying to leave through the 2007 server. We took that off and dont have any connectors at the moment

When we try to send to an internal address we get:
Primary target IP address responded with "451 5.7.3 Cannot achieve Exchange Server authentication."

Anyone have any clues?

can you not add a send connector, then on the network tab add a smarthost of the ip of the 2000 server?

That what I think we need. Should I make a send connector of "Internal" sending to the 2000 server?

Is there any configuration that needs to be done on the 2000 besides setting authentication?

Well, we added a send connector and now it didn't take over anything. We can send to external addresses but when we send to an internal address the message gets added to the SMTPRELAYROTIRG with the same message of "451 5.7.3 Cannot achieve Exchange Server authentication."

Messages going to external addresses go to another queue and sends out quickly.

In the Server Config/Hub Transport, edit the receive connectors. Under "Default" or whatever name of connector you have where the network tab lists port 25, tick the section marked Exchange Server authentication.

Zelandakh, thanks for the suggestion. That option was already checked.

The problem still exists. What's interesting to me is that internal mail goes through smtprelayrotirg while external mail go through SmartHostConnectorDelivery. Those (external) messages that go through SmartHostConnectorDelivery send find. But those (internal) messages that go through SMTPRELAYROTIRG get stuck in queue.

Anyone else have any suggestions?
