I've been through the forum pretty thouroghly i think, and I read about the error messages concerning cityinfo.dat.
My problem is a bit different.
When trying to start sidekick, i get a small window that pops up with a "square" "i" "square" "straigh line" E square\cityinfo.dat

What does this mean and how can i fix this?
Thanks

Dear mboles,

See the following on my website I quote it here but there are a lot of other solutions there too.

Q26
SDK99 Cannot find the file cityinfo dat.txt

Q. "Cannot find the file \ cityinfo.dat, which is required for running this application.
Followed by:
Message: "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error!
At the end of the Installation process, the error "Can not find the file \cityinfo.dat, which is required for running this application." occurs when Sidekick 99 tries to open.
What should I do?
A. Here are two possible solutions:
1. If the file License.txt resides in the root directory (usually C:\) before beginning the installation process, this error will occur. To resolve, delete the License.txt file. Choose Add/Remove Programs from the Windows Control Panel and remove Sidekick 99 and TrueSync Plus. Restart Windows and then rerun the Installation program
2. Using Windows Explorer, search your hard drive for the file CITYINFO.DAT. If it is found, rename it to CITYINFO.OLD. Then choose Programs | Sidekick 99 | Product Updates to update Sidekick.
3. If you own a REX Classic and originally installed TrueSync Desktop and then installed Sidekick 99, this problem may be due to trying to run TrueSync Desktop rather than Sidekick. To check this, go to the Windows Start menu. If you see both REX TrueSync Desktop and Sidekick 99 listed, select TrueSync Desktop If TrueSync Desktop runs without the cityinfo.dat error, then do the following:
- If you are running Windows 95 or Windows 98, delete the REX TrueSync shortcut from the Windows\Start Menu.
- If you are running Windows NT, delete the REX TrueSync shortcut from the WinNT\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu.

Check it out.

Jim

Thank you. I tried these steps. Also, it does not say that it cant find the cityinfo.dat file, but it has weird characters that i tried to descibe.

Dear mboles,

OH! (WRY GRIN)
Could you explain what Version of Windows you are on and have you just installed Sidekick99 or altered anything else about the program.

Another option is to make sure that you install it under the username that you will be using it with. (If you understand that convoluted explanation)!
Also create a shortcut from the actual program file i.e. Sidekick.exe in the program folder and start the program by double-clicking that shortcut.
Try installing Sidekick98 and see if that has a problem.

Let me know how you get on
Regards
Jim

Thanks. OK. Here comes the long explanation.
I am running Starfish 97. Have been for yeaqrs on XP professional. Last week, it stopped working. Wouldn't open. We had just had a server crash, adn we lost some things, so i decided to uninstall and reinstall. I couldnt install the program. The Setup.exe would not run.
So i tried to simply copy the starfish program folder of a co-workers whose still works. I didnt think it would work, but getting an error message is better progress than not doing anything. So i solved the first couple error messages I got, then i got the strange character message. I am pretty sure it has to do with the fact that it is not installed under my login name.
I will try the shortcut suggestion. I will also try installing 98, but i had no luck getting that setup.exe to run either. I can unzip them, but the setup.exe wont start.

Thanks

On trying to instal Sidekick 98...
I unzipped the files, but setup.exe will not run. Any suggestions?

Dear mboles,

Really sorry that I did not get back to you earlier!

How are you getting on with the problem?
Please post the exact error message.

Regards
Jim

Life is unfair!

I have used REX (Starfish) (Truesync PIM), whatever they want to call it for maybe 10 years. I just loaded a new HP desktop with WinXP (curses, Microsoft) and SB Office 2007 and when I tried to load REX it won't fly. I'm sure it is because of Bill Gates' "Authenticity" approval.
Simple was beautiful.

Just because they change something, doesn't necessarily make it better!

I've never had a problem loading REX on ANYTHING before this, regardless of the OS or the computer.

Enough. Do you know what might be preventing REX from loading on my desktop computer?

What can you reccomend that has the look and feel of REX as a replacement.

PS: My handheld gave out years ago.
