copying files/folders to a NEW PACKAGE

ive just setup a new (empty) package in the MTS Explorer screen. I am trying to copy some files into it that are stored on another server in the office.

When i try to drag and drop these files, an error keeps coming up that says:---

"the package file cannot be read"

however, i know that this file is used successfully on another web server and there are no errors on it.

Any ideas on how i can copy this folder into a new package? (ive tried copying the folder from the server and into the package and also from my local drive, both to no avail)
