I am wanting to create a text editor in c++ but do not know how to create the text area.

uhh, have you tried a Memo?? or a RichEdit? what version of BCB are you using? there is an example of a RichEdit word processor in the examples folder in your local cbuilder directory

Also in console applications you can use window from conio.h
