Restoring data on MSS?

Restoring data on MSS?

Restoring data on MSS?

(OP)
I just recently had to rebuild a MM 3.0  I have a backup with all the mailboxes and greetings.  My question is do I rebuild the mailboxes first then reload the data or do I just reload the data and the reload builds the boxes?  If someone can help me out with this I would appreciate it.  I dont need to restore system data only mailbox's, messages, and greetings.

RE: Restoring data on MSS?

You need to do a restore from the backup menu but i think you should do a whole restore and not just the mailboxes unless something in the VMD has changed.

And also whay do you not need to restore the system data? If you do a restore i think it will over write everything anyway.

I have only done a full restore after a rel 3 upgrade

Ken I had to rebuild the box.  So it has a new VMD.  I dont want to overwrite the system data as it will revert back to the VMD that no longer exists.

When you do a system restore it gives you 3 options to choose from for restore.

I actually went ahead and did a restore of the greetings and messages and I got a successful message, however when I logged ino the VM box the messages where not there.

I guess my question would be, do the boxes need to be built before the restore, or does the restore buld the boxes as well.

Thanks Ken your always helpful.

RE: Restoring data on MSS?

So it sounds like you started from scratch and reloaded the MAS also? I think you may need to rebuild the FEDB on the MAS if you already setup the MAS and MSS when you did the restore did you see any 1027 events in the app log ? or any thing in the app log that updated the number of users on the system after the mss came back up?

Yes your correct.  I reloaded both the MAS and MSS.  Once I was finished configuring the boxes, I created the 60 mailboxes then did a restore on the MSS.  I got a successful message from the MSS and was instructed to reboot.  I rebooted the MSS and started the messaging software.  I logged into one of the mailboxes and none of the old messages were in there.

RE: Restoring data on MSS?

Is the MSS & MAS name the same as before?

No a new VMD was created when I reloaded.

Ken I also have another question for you.  I made a mistake when I reloaded the box.  It was late at night and I was  tired.  When I was editing the MAS host information in the MSS.  I didnt put the FQDN on the form.  Instead of putting mas.company.com I put mas.company.local.  If I go in and update the host information is this going to cause a service disruption?

Thanks

Ken I may have misunderstood you.  Are you talking about the host names for each box?  If so then yes they are the same host name as before.  The only thing that changed was the VMD.

Thanks

RE: Restoring data on MSS?

It should let you change the host info in the MSS with out any trouble i have done this before.  Also i was asking about the name of the MSS and tha MAS. If they were not the same then the restore would restore a user as xx@old.xxx and there is a gui number i think is what it is called that is about 36 digits in lenght that id's the users so that may be why the messages are not showing up.  Did the recorded names restore?
