Can a scanner generate a number or string

Can a scanner generate a number or string

Can a scanner generate a number or string

(OP)
I am wondering whether there is such a thing as a hand held scanner (wired to a workstation) can be programmed to generate a random number or character string.  Our use is very basic as far as scanning, but would like to save data entry time on one particular field. We would like the ability for a scanner to generate a number.  Is there such a thing?

Thanks in advance,

P.Park

RE: Can a scanner generate a number or string

Is this a random number or a sequential number?
I would have your printer generate a number and then scan it along with the other info maybe on the same label?
you can also create sheets of numbers in Excel with a barcode font
using Excels Fill down
