.doc files changing to temp files when saved

In MS word 97, when I save a docment and give it a name like document.doc, and then go to open it in word 97, it is renamed ~1cment.tmp

What's going on here?

RE: .doc files changing to temp files when saved

I don't think it's renaming the file. When you open the file, Word97 creates a working version as a temp file in the same folder. That will remain there until you close the file - then it will be automatically deleted. However, the original file should still be there (though it will probably be locked since it is open for editing.)
