Pervasive Client Versions Question

Pervasive Client Versions Question

Pervasive Client Versions Question

(OP)
Hi,

I have come across a situation where we have a Pervasive Server on version 8.1 SP1 (with hot fixes) and a client that is on version 8.5.

My initial reaction is to bring the client into line with the server.

In the broader sense it perhaps is wiser to upgrade the whole thing up to the latest version of 8.7.  I know version 9 is the latest but I understand that it's more than just a service pack fix.

I would be grateful if anyone can answer the following questions:

1) What are the consequences of running a set up of an 8.1 server with an 8.5 client?  Could this be a serious risk or perhaps only a minor concern?

2) What are the benefits of upgrading to 8.7 or 9?  Our biggest issue is performance (both relational and transactional) and we are wondering if anyone had seen a big enough improvement in performance between the versions to warrant an upgrade.

Thanks and regards,
Tom

As long as you aren't using any new features of 8.5 and are only using Btrieve, it shouldn't be a problem. If you use OBDC, you might run into strangeness but I don't think it would be significant.  If you were trying to use the v9 client to a v8 server (or a v8 client to a v9 server) then you might run into issues.

THe main benefit for updating/upgrading is support.  If you run into a problem, Pervasive is only going to fix 8.7 and 9.1 (and even 8.7 is going to be unsupported soon).  There are some issues with 9.1 and I would strongly suggest extensive testing before deploying v9.1.
