Opening non-mov files in quicktime

I have quicktime pro and wanted to put some Red vs Blue (www.redvsblue.com if you don't knbow what that is) videos on my ipod but they are saved on my pc as *.* any file. I have tried to rename them as .mpeg, .mov, .m4v, and .mp4 eveytime I  tried to open them in quicktime I got an error saying "Error -2048: the file is not a movie file" I have tried one converter program that did work, however, it made the quality of the video horrible. Basically I have no idea where to go from here. But suggestions would be nice.
