is this normal....?

I've been working for a company for a year already.  I'm a network admin/database scripting/citrix admin + whatever else needs to be done. My manager never really tells me what he expects of me as an employee, just gives me projects and let me be. Some small projects get forgotten because there's always something more important. Sometimes I take my time especially with stored procedures for our 500 table database. I mean I know how to do it, but don't do it on daily basis therefore there's many things that I need to research and try before applying. We also don't have any weekly progress meetings. And with his personaity you can't really tell what he's thinking. But on the other hand he told me I don't have to worry about my job security just recently because I belong and employed by the head office instead of the branch itself (the branch had some firings recently of sales staff). Anyway... out of the blue he asks me that I need to start filling out daily log sheets and write down every task I'm doing with the time spent on it. He stated that the reason for that is that the upper management needs to know what I'm doing and not that he is questioning me slacking off or anything like that.

I do not believe that this is a very professional thing to do.  I mean mostly (not in my case) network admins only work like 30-40% of the time really from what I hear. We are the only 2 IT people at the branch.

is this normal and I should just comply?
or should I confront him an tell him what I think?
I don't reqally feel like doing those logs every day.
I forget all the time. I was never asked before.

what do you networking guys think? any opinions?

btw, I couldn't find a better thread :)

RE: is this normal....?

I have to fill out a sheet every week.  When this first started, I think the new CFO wanted to get rid of 1 of the 2 programmers (me and another guy).  Well, 7 years later, I'm still doing it.  I think it really helps my boss to be able to keep track of what I'm really doing.  It's not a big deal now, but when we first started doing if, I was really ticked off.  The other programmer eventually was fired for being incompetent.

RE: is this normal....?

Well see, weekly logs are more or less fine. But daily is just way too much.
