initdb exists but refuses to run

initdb exists but refuses to run

i installed the postgresql in my linux box recently. it seem to be installed ok and the necessary files exist in /usr/local/pgsql/bin --but when i try to run any command such as initdb it cannot find it even if i run it inside the directory where it exists. i changed the ownership of /usr/local/pgsql/bin and the initial postgre installation directory to something else than root (it does not work as root too).is there something i am doing wrong. the version i am trying to install is 8.0.3

RE: initdb exists but refuses to run

initdb will refuse to run as root-- so don't bother trying that.

would you mind telling me exactly how you type in the command, what shell you use and what distro?

if you don't feel like doing that-- the quick answer is add the location of the program to your path - and then you should be able to run it from anywhere.

Or- make sure you are giving the full path when you run it.  If you are in the directory where the program exists- if you don't have ./ in your path you may need that before the program name.

RE: initdb exists but refuses to run

i needed "./" in my path.

RE: initdb exists but refuses to run

If you are used to dos, like me, you think that your current working directory will just work.  gets me all the time.

enjoy running the best free dbms in the world (i think so anyway)
