Access to old .dbs file

Access to old .dbs file

I have a backup .dbs file from an old SQLBase database (around 8 years old - version 7 I think). Unfortunately this is all that remains of the database.

I was wondering if it is possible to access/extract the data from the .dbs file either using SQLBase 9.0 or any other software?

RE: Access to old .dbs file

Hi Dave. I think that the automatic conversion could open and read the database (.dbs) only connecting to it. Then it will be unusable with older version. So use a copy.

RE: Access to old .dbs file

you are right. the auto-convertion of older databases works fine. but you will get problems when you have stored procedures in the database. the best way is to reorganize the database (unload/load) it after auto-convertion has finished.
But sometime I have the problem that the auto-convert doesn´t work fine when the database-size is to big (f.e. more than 1GB of size )

RE: Access to old .dbs file

Many Thanks.

Is there a utility to convert the database or is it just a case of copying the .dbs file into a folder of the same name under the SQLBase directory and connecting?

I don't think it has stored procedures so that shouldn't be a problem

RE: Access to old .dbs file

normally you can only do a connection to the database when you have installed it on the new sqlbase server.
But do the unload load of the database if you will be luky in the future...there are many basic-changes in the database schema-structure (systables, datatypes, aso. ) when you do the unload and load. The convertion will be work 100%. Sometimes also view get lost when you use the auto-convert!
