If you're like me, and have been toying with the idea of Zend for awhile now is a great time.

They have a beta program for about a month, and while it's in effect you can toy with the product as much as you want.

I post it here less for the beta on the whole project, as for the beta on the development studio, it's pretty neat. I'm an emacs junky, and I've just started toying with it... I'm far from convinced, but I'm definately going to give it a fair shot

(tab completions and argument lists once you start to type in a function call!)

Anyway, it's loaded with features, and it's free for a month, I'm going to play with it and figured some others here might be interested.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression PHP was an open source project managed by the Apache Foundation.

I realize some of the biggest programmers and gururs of PHP development also run Zend.

Kind of like saying, Redhat produces Linux.

I wanted to look into this more before responding, and I have... and I still have these beliefs, so please enlighten me if I'm incorrect.

Beyond that... do you know of any realistic alternatives to the Zend optimizer/encrypter?

I'm developing a project which I will necessarily need to encrypt, and I would obviously like to optimize... but I'm not so sure I want to work with Zend, at the very least I'd like to know all my options.

I haven't written it yet... so I don't know about the speed up issue.

I will definately need to protect it for distribution, and at this stage I want to do the research so that if I need to speed it up I can.

Oh, and thanks for the clarification on how Zend is related to PHP, this is actually very important for me.

ZEND = Zeev Suraski + Andi guttmans, core devolopers.

to get some background on these guys, check out this web radio clip:

its a bit outdated, just before php4 was released i believe. but it has a few of these guys talking about how they came involved. just in case your curious. what we see depends mainly on what we're looking for.
