Aloha group! I am new to Citrix and Windows Server. I am seeking opinions on this configuration. My primary concerns are Windows CALs and which server they should be installed on.

This is a database application for 30 to 40 users. The database will be stored on a Windows Server 2003 box. Also running on with box are Active Directory, Citrix Data Store, Windows Terminal Server License server, Citrix License server. Call this Box 1.

Citrix Presentation Server 3.0 will be installed on another Windows Server 2003 box that has an identical twin, together they create a two server farm. Call these Boxes 2 and 3.

My research tells me that the Window CALs, and TS CALs for the Citrix clients should all be installed on Box 2.

Box 1 only needs 2 CALs to allow access to the database from Boxes 2 and 3.

My fear is that I will install the licenses on the wrong servers and then have only one chance to change things.

Don't know about windows Cals, but your TS cals need to go on the TS License server(box 1). Alternatively you can move the TS License server to box 2 or 3.

I would go with Scott's forstoption. Leave TS Licensing on box1 because a license server need to be a domain controller and you don't really want a Citrix server that is a DC.

There is no real "Windows Licensing Server" to install the CALs for Windows on either.

Leave boxes 2 & 3 as pure application servers if possible - just try to think of them as multi-user PCs and only install on them what you would install on a PC.

Aloha Mike,

Good suggestions - thanks. What's not clear to me is how many Windows CALs (not the TS CALs) each of the two application servers should have. This question pops up during the inital installation.

My logic suggests they be installed on the file server along with the TS CALs, since user applications (Citrix sessions) will require a connection to the database on the fileserver. So this is what I did for now.
