We have an exchange 5.5 server running on NT4 SP6 server. The exchange server has been configured to deal with internal email only. IMC has not been installed or setup. Instead we have added a POP3 account for all users Outlook 2002 clients to send and recieve external email. However, over the past couple weeks users have been getting the following error message in thier inboxes:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: Document2
Sent: 10/03/2005 1:06 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

Firstname Lastname on 10/03/2005 1:06 PM
The recipient name is not recognized
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a= ;p=Company Un;l=AXXXXXXXX_XX-050310200552Z-14471
MSEXCH:MSExchangeMTA:Servus CU:AXXXXXXXX_XX

This has been occurring only when sending to external contacts.

Would anyone know what might causing this type of issue.

We typically send messages to outside recipients as attachment from Microsoft Word.

The email got to your MTA, but it is unable to recognize the recipient address. And indeed, this address is non-existent in your site.

A possibility is, the user attempted to create a contact without an smtp address. Double check that.

(On a side note, what do you use to pass pop3 message since there is no IMS involved?)

We've added a pop3 account to outlook. The strange thing is that this error message is only generated when users try to send documents from Microsoft Word as attachment; however, when users send attached documents from Outlook instead it seems to work without error. Somehow Microsoft Word is trying to send messages meant for external contacts through exchange server instead of routing through pop3 accounts from our ISP. It seems that Microsoft Word is not making the distinction to use pop3 vs. internal email accounts.

By default, Word uses the default mapi engine to send mail via the internal Exchange account. Try to make the pop3 as the default account in Outlook.

We tried making pop3 the default in Outlook but still receive the same error message as above.

In Word 2002, there are 3 options to send mail. I usually prefer users to go to

File/Send to/Mail Recipient (as attachment)/

as this is the one that most likely get pass mail servers.

If this doesn't work, I guess you'll have to do it the old fashion way: save the file, compose email and attach the file manually.
