"Because of the widespread nature of this exploit, there are lots of different scenarios where the RPC service is terminating unexpectedly and the machine tries to reboot in 60 seconds. This DOES NOT MEAN that you've been infected with this virus. If you apply the Microsoft patch, run a full scan and nothing comes up, that means you've been EXPLOITED, but NOT INFECTED.

You may be dealing with TWO SEPARATE issues. One is the exploit of an 2000/XP systems by a non-virus induced system, while the other is a virus that exploits the system, infects it, then tries to exploit other systems. There are a lot of variations of scenarios, but if your machine is showing up as clean and the exploit hole has been patched, this shouldn't happen again. (until the next security flaw gets exploited)"

Can anyone tell me how to confirm that I am infected? I am running a recent copy of Macfee Pro v7 and I think it has the latest dat files...but is there another way to confirm infection???? Could the virus not allow my antivirus software to find the infection? I seem to be having trouble installing windows critical updates but that could be my ISP connection it sucks and terminates before I Downloan all of the files I selected...

bcastner provided you with the answer in your last thread...must you create duplicate posts? There are discussions ad nauseum on this issue both here and in the General Virus discussion forum. Check them out before you create unnecessary traffic.

You problem downloading critical updates may be related to the volume of traffic that Microsoft is getting to their Windows Update web site. We tried to access it here at work earlier and the page wouldn't come up. Apparently you weren't the only person who ignored the critical update notifications and news articles about the latest exploit of the month until the infections started.

My local paper (Washington Post) reported that Microsoft served 40 million requests for the Hotfix yesterday alone.
