Networking troubles. I have a HP laptop running Windows XP and a Compaq Presario desktop running Windows 98se. I can access the Desktop (98) from the laptop (XP) but went I try to access the laptop from the desktop it asks for a password. I have not to my knowledge every assigned a password. So I did a search in files and folders for password list and found a list. But it did not show any passwords. It would let me change the password if I knew the old password. My Question is how do I find out the password and is the password that is needed for the windows 98se or is it XP. I am sharing just fine to the 98se share folders, so it's no big deal. just would like to fix it.

(How many times has the average computer user rebooted?)[sadeyes]

looks like I have Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) enabled! So I right click on local Area Connection Properties\Advenced. To disable the Firewall since I use a another firewall any. But what I get is; Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. Windows management instrumentation(WMI)information might be corrupt.Tells me to use System Restore. Which I use, but the Restore only goes back to Feb. Which is the samething I have. Is there another way with out reinstalling the OS back. Would there be a file that I can access in Windows to disable?

[ponder]or can I pull the Network Wizard file off my XP installation disk? Like copy it out of the i386 file on the disk and paste it in to the i386 file into windows file on my laptop. I may have to uninstall or cut the file out of i386 file first! If so what file name is it? or any thing like that.
Thanx [blush]

Run the wizard, it gives you the option to create a disk to be used on your Win98 desktop. You do not have to cut and paste anything.

But I would not do this.

Download and run this utility to repair your Winsock Service Stacks and reset your connection:
Now go back into properties and do several things:

1. Remove the firewall
2. Under TCP/IP, Properties, Advanced, WINS tab, disable LMHOSTS and enable Netbios over TCP/IP.
3. Under Control Panel, Users and Groups, enable the Guest account
4. Use the link smah gave above as a checklist to make sure everything else needed has been done.
