I am running XP pro, as an upgrade from Win2K pro.

When XP starts, it sits for 2 to 3 minutes at the "loading personal settings" screen before loading explorer.

I can hibernate/restore in about 25-30 seconds, so this is how I usually shut down my PC now, because the anoyance of waiting for XP to "load personal settings".

Any thoughts on what is making this take so long? I tried using bootvis to optimize the bootup sequence, but it doesn't do anything for the preference problem.

Any input would be appreciated.

I have the same prob. I have restarted a least three times and then a log off seems to go faster. It has something to do with saving info in case you need to do a restore. After at least three restarts the machine gets all the info it needs for a creating a restore.

TRy switching on the indexing services on the Drive that stores your settings. Usually C:
Right click on C disk ilon and check setting.
Turn off compression if it on.
Worth a try.
Mine takes just a few seconds to switch.
