Is there any way to take recovered data from a crashed hard drive and re-use any system restore points I created with WinXP? By the way, a lot of users on tek-tips.com recommended using a program called GetDataBack to recover a formatted HD's data...worked very well. Thanks.

I know there's the c:\windows\system32\restore folder, but I don't really see much in there.

Anyway, to avoid giving too many details, anybody know a way to get this done?

Given that you've recovered all the data back to it's original form, wouldn't you just boot up in safe mode and press on the dialog that comes up to use your restore points? Or am I way off.

well, two problems...the first link describes using your "windows xp cd". I don't have one. I have one of those recovery cd's that automatically starts to format your drive. that's where I went wrong...put that in and it started to format to 20%.

the next is the reason why I put my recovery cd in. I kept getting a BSOD after the windows xp splash screen.

so...I couldn't get into windows, then it started to format (which wiped out my mbr) so I couldn't really do that much.

bottom line...since I got the DATA back I was ok. the only thing that I really didn't get back were some quicken data files. I think they were corrupted during the transfer process, including the backups of those files. why they were left on the same hard drive is beyond me, but that's what being IT is all about.

thanks for the helpful advice, but I didn't really have time to juggle my choices. the boss said "get it done by the end of the day" and left it in my hands.

thanks again and I look forward to the next time my guys break something so I can come back to the people on here.

thanks
