Hi

I'm having a bit of a nightmare trying to upgrade a PC from Win98 to XP. It collects all the info, copies all the files, reboots the machine and starts the XP setup. It shows the msg about F6 for SCSI, then it hangs. I've tried reformatting the PC and booting of the CD and it does exactly the same except I get an error about d:\.....\disparc.?.

Please help
Lbob

If you have reformated the pc how can you upgrade the machine?

I would make sure that you media is ok it might be that your windows xp disc isnt 100% ok.

Another thing is to check that your hardware is ok run a disk check on your hard disk and a memory test, as windows xp is more sensative than windows 98.

oops, I meant to say I'd tried the upgrade. That failed, so I thought I'd fdisk, reformat etc and install straight from the CD, but again it fails. The wierd thing is the cd works fine on another PC, installed ok?!?!?!

Well if it is an upgrade cd it will not work without a certain file from the old OS on the hard drive, I can't remember which one but sure some here knows.

Does this machine meet the minimum requirements of running windows xp? Also is it using standard IDE hard drives? If you have scsi or sata drives you need to provide xp setup with the right drivers or install will fail.

It's not an upgrade CD, it's the full version. I've tried both Home & Pro versions.

It meets all the requirements, it's normal IDE hard drive.

Hi Lbob,

Have you experienced any problems with your hard drive prior to this instance?

Unfortunately I have not seen this problem before myself, nor can I find any information relating to "disparc" (although I'm sure it rings a bell). What I would personally do is strip the computer down to it's bare essentials (CPU/PSU/RAM/GFX) and try the setup again. Let us know how you get on.

Russell.

Hi

No problems before with the Hard disk. I'm going to try a different CD rom tonight though. It's so annoying!!!

Cheers
