hey, I am getting an error on the install of service pack 2.
it goes all the way up to inspecting the system and backing up files. after that I get the error "unable to read or write to data base" then it cancels the install...
I know is in the windows enviroment because I had this same error on a clone partition....the fix was to slipstream and make a bootable cd then install as a repair install.
that partition had no problems at all doing that...
I was just wondering what would cause the problem in the first place.
I read the windowsupdate.log and it the last part of it states...

2004-08-30 13:23:36-0700 2368 b18 Trying to make out of proc datastore active
2004-08-30 13:23:36-0700 2368 b18 Out of proc datastore is now active
2004-08-30 13:28:38-0700 2368 b18 Out of proc datastore is shutting down
2004-08-30 13:28:40-0700 2368 b18 Out of proc datastore is now inactive

the list is long and too much to put in but that is some of the issues I am having.....
I don't mind doing a reinstall/repair but, I would like to try to get it to work without the error
hey thanks for the input and yes I do have plenty of back-up for Microsoft's screwed up update

Microsoft must think we are all idiots so they have to control the computer more than we do.....this is funny stuff..so far I have had issues or failures on 15% of my clients computers with service pack 2 install that was on an existing system and not a fresh install (cd install with service pack 2 slipstreamed works fine in all computer I have installed so far)
hey here is the link to slipstream by the way.

It seems to me in order to get SP2 installed Windows must be in a near as possible pristine condition with no odd tweaks etc. This maybe the reason you find a Repair (slipstream) working but SP2 update failing. I back this observation up with the fact that any SP2 update that fails for me always goes straight in on the same system if I re-install Windows followed by SP2.

LOL.....thanks Linny I have observed the same thing...I just skipped some steps by having a slipstreamed XP sp2 cd ....and yea I have lots and lots of tweaks in my system. from tcp/ip tweaks to just plain make windows go faster tweaks...man, you gotta love power users
most of the failures I have seen are networked computers using medical software or real estate apraisal software...both use client/server configurations and are not very flexable....and both have a significant data base...for some reason or other the SP2 does not want to install in those systems.....lol....one side effect of installing on these systems is a hang and failure of the windows update web page...but that is another issue in it self (fixed those issues aready)

anyways I am getting ahead of myself if you slipstream then install/repair if you need SFC /scannow the system does not complain....
Linny I always enjoy reading your fixes and you do a great service in here. I hope this helps you.
hey its time for bed......see ya on the next post

Tried bcastner's fix and it did not work.....bummers...some more info on thread779-906955
still curious and I have tried just about everything.....except what works.
hey, laterz

The only solution I found around this was to create a new administrator account, log in to it, and then install the SP2 update.
