Hey All,

so I have 1 particular server which is having xp_sendmail issues. It just hangs so the email never goes out and proceeding logic never gets processed.

The only solution I have at this time is to restart the SQL service which buys us several hours before it stops working again.

This functionality has been in place for several years so this is an seemingly out of the blue failure.

The server is SQL 2000 sp4, windows 2003 sp1, outlook 2002 and no recent changes to blame.

BTW here is the error message I get from a query analyzer test of xp_sendmail.

ODBC: Msg 0, Level 16, State 1
Communication link failure

Connection Broken

I get 0 error info from event logs or sql logs

That is the message from ODBC when your connection is dropped.

What happens when you connect to the server's console, logging in as the SQL Server, and open outlook?

I remoted into the sql server using the credentials of the sql service account.

I opened outlook with no problem and could send an email to myself.

Let me specify how I get that error. That error happens when attempt to exec xp_sendmail from query analyzer and it hangs(will hang until sql server restarts)...so I cancel the query...maybe I cause the disconnect then.

sorry maybe the above error has nothing to do with the real issue

The error above unfornituall has nothing to do with the actual problem.

Try deleteing the Outlook profile and resetting it up (with a different name) then reconfiguring the SQL Mail.

We had a similar issue a while ago, but I can't remember for the life of me what the fix was.

Run profiler when you do this the next time so you can see at what point the process is hanging.

The last SQL service restart about 40 hours ago seems to have done the trick.

I will continue to look into it and repost if I have any news to give.

thanks
