xp search hangs 1

Hi All,

I have a XP Pro SP2 with all updates and patches. Everytime I do a "search" for anything, the computer hangs. Even if I stop the search. I have to end task. I have rebuilt it...same issue. I'm not using Indexing service and there are no external drives attached. Any suggestions are appreciated.

What have you rebuilt? Search or XP?

Any corruption in the Registry is often saved as part of your settings in any repair install of XP.


Have you checked for a malware infection as being the cause?

Are there any clues coming from the Event Viewer?

The one with the srchasst.inf file may be worth a try.

Some general things to try.

Removing adware & spyware

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Thanks. I will try all. I reformatted and rebuilt XP. However it looks like one of the users profiles I copied over has problems. If I use explorer to open their "desktop" folder, the computer goes to 100% and never recovers unless I end task on explorer, which Is what I had to do before. This user has many files on folders on their desktop screen. I'll let you know.
