Hi,

Scenario:
Windows XP Pro logging on to NT Domain.
We created a roaming profile for the XP user, set up the path where the profile is to be stored on the NT server. Checked the permissions (gave the user full control)... in short, we've pretty much followed all the intructions on creating a Roaming user profile (checked both for NT and XP)...
Now, the problem is, when we attempt to log on, we keep getting this error:

"Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to logon with your local profile. Changes to your profile will not be copied to server when you logoff. Possible causes include network problems or insufficient security rights...."

We've checked the permissions, path, and all possible things that we're aware of. But it just wont read our roaming profile. Is there something else we're missing or does Windows XP work only in AD?

thanks!

You could try sharing the roaming profile folder (use a $ suffix if you don't want it visible) and using the share name in user manager (\\server\sharename) when specifying profile location.

I know XP works in AD because we have one XP box here. Did you narrow the possibilities down to Windows? For instance, after you login despite the error, can you get to other Network locations or ping local computers/servers? I know this may sound like simple stuff, but whenever we have that problem it's connectivity.

we could ping the server, other computers, could even browse on the profile location on the server and actually see the files. There is no permissions issue... everything else seems to be working, except that the local profile could not be copied to the server...

there's a note on MS KB Q314478 that says "verify that you are not choosing users or groups from the MS NT-based domain, because WinXP is designed to use AD to select domains"

XP won't work with NT? is that what MS meant?

hi, it's not so much as XP connecting to NT Domain... we could connect just fine. KB24366 is not applicable to our situation. It's only the Roaming User profile that we are having a issue with... we could be missing a configuration on the server or the workstation.

thanks for your help!
