I re-installed windows xp home edition on the pc that it came on with the original licsnse key. Now it's asking me to go through a verification & Registration step. Why is this? shouldn't it already be registered? Is their anyway to bypass this step? Do i need to call Microsoft to get past this? I need help what are my options? I can not complete the instalation and get to the desktop with out passing through this process.

Choose the option to not register. You should then be able to finish the installation. Then you will have 30 days to activate WinXP. If you have not changed any hardware on the PC, you might be able to do it over the internet. Otherwise, you may have to call to activate, but it is not that big a deal.

Thank you Scottew. I still have the same problem.

I chose not to register, but this is not taking me to no where. After clicking on register later, it takes me to the login screen. When I try to login, it takes me to register screen. What a vicious circle!

Now let me ask you, are you using the same installation cd as when the machine was brand new? If you use the OEM cd's that come with branded pc's you usually don't have to go thru the whole registration thing.

There are utilities out there that would allow you to change the key. Have you tried logging in in safe mode? If you can try to see if you can get your net connection up and running that way and see if you can register next time.
