On a XP machine connected directly to a 98 machine via 100mb Ethernet, as a Workgroup, the 98 machine has no problems read/write to the xp shared folders. However, I can't grant rights on the 98 machine to allow the xp machine in. On the 98 machine under Network/Properties/Access Control, the name of the system to 'obtain list of users and groups from" is set to the xp machine's name (it would not allow the 98 machine's name). However, on the 98 machine, if I want to grant users rights to a shared folder, it errors with 'cannot get a list of users at this time'.
How do I tell the xp system to allow its user/group list be viewed/used on the 98 system?

Also, am I better off setting up [the xp machine as] a domain? (Although this is a small network, I need to know how these guys work on larger lans.) Will that solve the problem? If so, how do I make it a domain?

Also fwiw, there is a second Ethernet card in the xp machine used exclusively for a DSL connection, which is working nicely. Oh, when I set that up I set it not to allow incoming connections. Related to the problem?

Thank you all ia!

You can't set up a Domain with XP (no server version available yet) - need 2k or NT server for that. Have you got file and printer sharing installed on 98 machine? Once that is installed, you get the option to share drives and folders by right clicking on them - you just share them read only or full access - don't need lists of users.

Yes, I have the option on the 98 machine to share. But on that same panel there is a window for 'list of users' that have the right to use that share. If I leave that list empty, Win98 errors/informs me that although the folder is shared I need to setup users/groups that will be allowed to use it. When I try to do just that, it errors with 'cannot get a list of users at this time'.
Btw, this is 98se, fwiw.
Let me point out that I let the xP wizard create the network, including inserting the xpcd in the win98system to complete it. Maybe that sets things up this way. And again, the 98 system has no problems reading/writing to the xp's shared folder.

Win98 lets you set either share level or user level access (if I remember rightly, don't use win98 much nowadays). Again if memory serves, share level does not require you to supply users (so is what's normally used). These settings in network properties (I can check on 98 installation when I get home - but am currently on 2k!). Hope this helps.

Thanks! That did it - almost. Now I can share, but ONLY if I map a drive manually and type in the \\machine\share name. If I try to browse via 'network connections', or via explorer, I only get to the point of seeing the 98 machine but cannot get deeper even if the root of the 98 drive is shared. But again, via MAP it DOES work.
Should I settle for this?

If it works & isn't too much trouble - yes! I'm at home now and have XP happily accessing 98 shares with no mapping etc, just off my network place/network neighborhood, so don't know why you need extra mapping to make it work - but as I said, if it is working - good. You can look into niceties later if you want.
