I downloaded and ran a program called cleanup.com in order to remove some spyware. After I restarted the computer, the taskbar changed from blue to gray and the start button changed from green to gray. All of the letters are now black but used to be white. The shut down box has also changes in appearance. I have tried to R click the start button and change the taskbar but this does nothing. I have also gone into systems properties and tried to change the theme but the taskbar remains gray. Any thoughts?

How about:

Right click desktop > Properties > Appearance tab

What does the "Windows and Buttons" selection say? If it doesn't already, try making this "Windows Xp Style".

Via Control Panel check these two locations,
Folder Options/ General and check the settings.
System/ Advanced/ Performance and check the settings.

Does Cleanup.com have any restore facility, otherwise you could try XP's System Restore.

I went to desktop>properties>appearance. Under the windows and buttons tab, the only option I have is Windows Classic. I do not even have an option for XP? Any thoughts? Thanks.

It could be possible that the cleanup.com software thought some files in your themes folder were infections and removed them, in which case you would need to restore the Themes from the windows XP cd.

Before that though did you check the following that linney suggested?

Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced Tab > Settings button under the "Performance" heading.

In there you will find several tick boxes and some radio buttons.

If the tick box for "Use Visual Styles on Windows and Buttons" is not ticked then you will not be able to select any themes.
