XP Pro, sp2 network logon?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this... I've just finished configuring my workstation at the office. It shipped with XP Home SP2 preinstalled on a SATA drive and it proved to be a nightmare to install XP Pro until I (temporarily) installed a floppy drive in it.

<digression> The company has a small business software package from MS including XP Pro sp1, XP Pro sp2, XP MC Ed., Win2K3 server... Each of the pro versions was on a CD by itself, the media center edition took 2 CDs. When I tried installing Pro SP2 it kept asking for me to insert CD2?!? After the installation completed it claimed to be media center edition and numerous (pro) applets didn't exist. I couldn't install the SP1 without formatting the hd and it is SATA causing even more problems. </digression>

Now I'm running into networking issues.

I should indicate that the company I'm working with has a half dozen accounting consultants (some who write code), two dedicated coders but no real network people. Of the coders, I have the most experience so even though I've only been here for a month and barely know how to spell "Network", I've become the defacto network admin (without permission to access certain machines).

Anyway when setting up my computers connection, I was told our domain name was COMPANY.LOCAL and used that in the setup. When I browse the network I see two workgroups (am I using the terms correctly?): COMPANY and COMPANY.LOCAL. My computer is the only machine appearing under COMPANY.LOCAL. If I log in on a different computer I see all computers under COMPANY.LOCAL and (on some computers) my computer doesn't appear at all.

This morning I was unable to access any of my mapped network drives nor was I able to reconnect to them. I went to the boss (an accounting consultant who writes code) and he reset my password, set to prompt for another password on first logon. It had no apparent effect.

I shutdown & restarted my computer. I tried logging on with USER, DOMAIN\USER, SERVER\USER (substituting both variations of our domain name as well as the domain servers name and following it with my name). All attempts simply brought me back to a local machine logon and they'd only accept my old password - the one before the one my boss changed.

I'm assuming that he changed my network logon account and I was only logging on locally (how do I logon to the network?).

On a hunch, I tried using remote desktop to connect to our server (incidentally, I don't have permission to access the server). When I tried logging on I was prompted to change my password. After changing my password I was told "you don't have permission..."

I'm assuming that (unlike everyone else here) I'm not being reminded when my password is near expiration because I'm part of a workgroup rather than the domain - or something like that.

So, here's a mittful of questions:
How can I tell if my computer is part of a domain or a workgroup?
How can I change it if mine's in a workgroup but should be part of a domain?
(Other than the way I did it by trying to use remote desktop) How can I log onto the network to change my password when it expires?

Also, can someone point me at a good book/web resource where I can find answers for the other questions I haven't asked?

Tell your boss that he can set password policy, but not himself change your password. Thousands of complications can occur.

Most of your issues can be uncovered by right-clicking My Computer, Properties, and clicking on the Computer Name tab.
